Texturing

With the basics of selecting color, adjusting light and shadow, and knowing some techniques for surface detailing, it's time to dig into more complex texture. Many of these resources will be helpful for creating blocks, but you can apply the ideas to 3D rigging and surface texture on 3D models, too.

2D Details Matter

The Shrine of Truth is a perfect example of how quality texturing on flat surfaces can give you so much more with your voxel art. View the video and use the link in the credit below to explore it up close on OpenSea. It consists of seven separate assets that can be combined any way the owner likes in one LAND. Its intended assembly is shown here:

Pixel Art Tips for Great Surface Detailing

Yes, we know you're doing voxel art, but to create the most efficient art in VoxEdit you'll be painting the surfaces of prisms and using techniques to make it appear more detailed than its shape will convey. The resource below is full of great examples and non-examples to help you piece together where to start with color and how to create some basic definition on flat surfaces.

Common Textures Broken Down Simply

This Pixel Art Textures Tutorial graphic has an excellent set of examples if you're interested in a simplified explanation of some commonly found textures in 2D pixel art with a simple breakdown of the shape. Seeing the shape clearly in the gray image on the left helps you more easily distinguish the light and shadow in each example image.

Texturing Techniques Made Simple

Natural Textures

Natural Textures: Pixelblog - 2 - Texture - If you're considering natural textures, take a look at the techniques in this guide. Many of these suggestions would be helpful for creating blocks. Some of the visuals here can also inspire how you might reuse models in VoxEdit to add shapes repeatedly, like puffs of leaves on a tree. The free-form technique shown in a GIF is also interesting to examine when thinking about light and shadow.
