# About The Sandbox
## About The Sandbox
The company was founded as **Pixowl** in 2011 by Arthur Madrid, the CEO, and Sébastien Borget, the COO. It became **The Sandbox** when acquired by [**Animoca Brands**](https://www.animocabrands.com/) in 2018 to launch a 3D blochain-based vision for the series.
We have offices and remote staff operating from all over the world, including France, Argentina, Korea, Japan, United Kingdom, United States, and more.

Prior to joining the Animoca family, Pixowl developed many games, with over 40 million downloads.

## The Sandbox Today
The Sandbox game has come a long way to allow creators to publish their own games on virtual LANDs and mint and sell their own assets in the Marketplace.
While building [Partnerships](/en/about/partnerships.md) with big brands and IPs, players have been able to earn rewards while having fun in [Seasons and Events](/en/players/seasons-and-events.md) and creators have been empowered with [Creator Contests](/en/creator/creators-program/creator-contests.md), Builders Challenges, and opportunities like the Builders Launchpad to help build their skills while providing opportunities to earn and/or share their user generated content (UGC) with the world.
The Sandbox has shifted its transactions to the Polygon network to reduce gas fees for users making purchases on the Marketplace, which now offers virtual LANDs, hundreds of thousands of avatars, assets, and Catalysts to mint assets as NFTs.
The Sandbox has also launched a [**DAO**](https://www.sandboxdao.com/) that will gradually decentralize The Sandbox further so that stakeholders in the platform will have greater influence on its decision making.
